This event is a free, hands-on, interactive workshop that provides a pragmatic introduction to GNU/Linux and the command line (CLI).

Most RCC Services are built on the GNU/Linux operating system. If you want to submit jobs, upload and download data, or manage any advanced workflows, you will need to know how to use the Linux CLI. This workshop will cover the fundamentals of using GNULinux and performing basic tasks on the HPC. While this course may have general appeal even if you do not use RCC resources.

Workshop Format

This is an interactive, hands-on workshop. It will be held in a fully-equipped classroom laboratory with computers. Attendees may bring their own notebook computers, but this will not be necessary.

Topics Covered

By the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to connect to and interact with popular GNU/Linux distributions, including those used at the RCC.

Specific topics covered include:

• Connecting to servers via SSH
• Compiling simple code
• Submitting jobs to the HPC
• Managing jobs on the HPC
• Uploading and downloading data on Linux servers
• Common CLI tools and techniques

Instructor

This workshop is led by Casey McLaughlin, the RCC Support Coordinator. Casey has ten years of professional experience using and administering GNU/Linux systems, and six years of adjunct teaching experience at FSU. He proudly replaces Windows with the latest distribution of Ubuntu whenever he gets a new laptop.

The location of these workshops is Dirac Science Library Room 152 (map). NOTE: The entrance is located on the southeast corner of the building, across from the Oceanography building next to the parking garage. Use that entrance, not the main library entrance.
