Hurricane Micheal: RCC Services online

UPDATE - Monday, Oct 15, 5pm - We are happy to announce that our cluster is back online.  Bringing back a cluster as diverse as ours is a complicated task, so please report an unusual things you might encounter to support@rcc.fsu.edu.

UPDATE - Monday, Oct 15 - 8:30am - We are currently bringing the cluster back online; most of our core services were brought back online during the weekend and we are currently powering on the compute nodes and login nodes.

Please don't submit any new jobs yet until we give the all clear signal this afternoon. Some "zombie" jobs get stuck on the scheduler from before the hurricane and any job could get canceled while we figure our the issues.

UPDATE - Saturday, Oct 13 - 1pm - City power was restored to the Sliger building and we will be trying to bring back our compute nodes and storage during the weekend. Please keep in mind that not all RCC staff has power or cell reception at home restored yet, so things might go a bit slower than expected. We hope to have everything online before Monday.

UPDATE - Wednesday, Oct 10 - 8am - There was no damage to the Sliger building, but while it is running on generator power we will not turn the cluster back on. Updates will be given as soon as we know more.

UPDATE - Wednesday, Oct 10 - 8am - With Hurricane Michael making landfall as a category 4, we decided that it is better to be safe than sorry. We will start shutting down our resources between 9:30 and 10AM this morning. Depending on weather or road conditions, we will try to bring back equipment on Thursday.

UPDATE - Monday, Oct 8, 2018 - 1:15pm: The forecast for Hurricane Michael has become more severe.  FSU will be closing from Tuesday through Friday.

Despite this, we have no immediate plans to disable or disrupt any RCC services.  This includes the HPC, Spear, data storage, VMs, and other services.

Over the past year, we have worked to consolidate our services in the Sliger Data Center.  This facility includes a backup generator which can provide several days worth of power.  During recent storms (Hermine and Irma), this facility remained online for the duration of the storm and the aftermath.

If circumstances change (such as a prolonged power outage that exceeds our capacity to generate power) we will re-evaluate and post updates here and our email list.

Monday, Oct 8, 2018 - 9am - RCC staff is closely following the development of tropical storm/Hurricane Michael. According to the latest prediction, Michael's path will include Tallahassee, but will be downgraded as a tropical storm. Currently, we are planning on keeping the HPC cluster and the Sliger server room in full operation.

But, any change in plans will be communicated to this list.
